I have just an article about the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) objection towards the anti-discrimination bill. This is just sad. Being gay or lesbian is not of their choice. They can’t help it if they fell for the same gender. Besides, some ‘handicapped’ handicapped themselves to ask for alms in the streets. It was their choice. Not all poor people are poor by choice. Some just laze around and wait for cash from their OFW relatives. Another example would be having minimum wage and having more than 5 kids. How could one sustain them accordingly? It was their choice to have that many kids.
Another CBCP lawyer Jo Imbong said the LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender) should not be considered the same as the elderly, the handicapped, and the poor.
“These people are disadvantaged not by their own choice. But the third sex, they choose this. How can you give protection to a choice like that?” Imbong said.
I don’t see why anyone should discriminate the LGBT. What wrong had they done? Being perverts? Well, there are also perverts among the straight community. You don’t see them being discriminated. I’ve read somewhere that the bible never said anything about the gay people (1).Why condemn them? There are religious LGBT people there, too. Although maybe not many because the church condemns them. Another thing, I thought the church forgives people of their faults. If the church sees being gay as a fault, why not forgive them? Forgiving them would not mean they would miraculously change. But, same goes with some straight sinners. They may still do it again.
Ronald Reyes, a lawyer of the CBCP, said they had no qualms about the bill before but became concerned when the bill was amended and “sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity” were included.
“It’s opening the door for same sex marriages, which our country doesn’t allow,” Reyes told reporters.
Regarding the excerpt above, he sort of got it wrong. This country doesn’t allow same sex marriages not because the country doesn’t allow it, but because the Catholics won’t allow it. Why strip the LGBT of their happiness? Imagine the possibility of more orphans being adopted and finding themselves a happy home, too. It’s a win-win situation. Wouldn’t you want that? It’s how I see it anyway.
Well yeah, this article is just sad. This is why I stay away from religious narrow-minded people. I have catholic/religious friends, but they would not go to the extents of excommunicating them nor even ‘unfriending’ them. The CBCP could propose adding a fine line to the bill if they want; stating priests don’t have to pay if they do not want to wed same sex couples. Of course, that would still be discriminating someone. But, at least they will not have to pay a fine or be jailed.
(1) I haven’t read the whole bible, so I could be wrong. I thought I’m giving Catholics a favor for not reading it because I see it as a story/history book. o_o;
